What are Gross Motor Skills?

Gross motor skills involve the large muscles used for movement — running, jumping, climbing, balance, coordination, and body awareness. These skills are essential for physical play, safety, and participation at school.

Does your child struggle with any of the following?

  • Difficulty running, climbing, or jumping

  • Poor balance or frequent tripping

  • Trouble riding a bike or scooter

  • Weak posture or fatigue during sitting

  • Avoiding playground activities or sports

  • Difficulty with coordination (catching, throwing, skipping)

  • Delays in motor milestones

How OTs Help

Our OTs observe and assess movement patterns, coordination, strength, balance, and postural control.

Therapy may include:

  • Core and upper body strengthening

  • Balance and coordination training

  • Reflex integration activities

  • Motor planning tasks (obstacle courses, sequencing)

  • Body awareness (proprioceptive input)

  • Playground skills

We support your child at home or school to help them feel safe, confident, and capable during everyday movement.
