What is Art-Based Psychotherapy?

Art-based psychotherapy supports children and teens in expressing thoughts and emotions that may be difficult to put into words. Through creative activities such as drawing, painting, and storytelling, children are given a safe and engaging way to explore their inner experiences.

For many children, especially those who experience big emotions, anxiety, or difficulty with emotional awareness, talking alone can feel overwhelming. Art-based approaches allow children to communicate at their own pace while building trust, confidence, and emotional insight.

This approach is guided by a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and integrates evidence-based psychotherapy techniques with creative expression to support emotional regulation, self-expression, and coping skills in a developmentally appropriate way.

What Psychotherapy Can Help With:

Psychotherapy supports children and teens with challenges related to:

  • Anxiety, worry, and stress

  • Big emotions, emotional overwhelm, or frequent meltdowns

  • Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes

  • Low mood, irritability, or emotional withdrawal

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Social difficulties and peer relationships

  • School-related stress or school refusal

  • Family changes (moves, separation, grief, new siblings)

  • Coping with difficult or overwhelming experiences

Art-based psychotherapy can be especially helpful for younger children or those who benefit from a more visual, play-based approach to understanding and managing their emotions.
