What are Play Skills?

Play is a child's primary occupation. Through play, children develop creativity, social understanding, emotional regulation, problem-solving, motor skills, and resilience.

Does your child struggle with any of the following?

  • Playing independently

  • Taking turns or sharing

  • Pretend play or imagination

  • Staying engaged with a toy

  • Following the lead of others

  • Joining peers in play

  • Big emotions during play transitions

How OTs Help

OTs use play as the foundation of therapy. We assess social skills, engagement, sensory needs, emotional regulation, flexibility, and motor planning.

Therapy may include:

  • Child-led play therapy approaches

  • Turn-taking and cooperative play

  • Pretend play development

  • Sensory-based play to support regulation

  • Joint attention

  • Building flexible thinking and coping strategies

  • Supporting initiation and engagement

We coach parents to integrate therapeutic play strategies into daily routines.
